LeBron James dominated this NBA Championship series. The NBA’s Most Valuable Player has been under huge scrutiny by many sports commentators; not the least of which has been Skip Bayless, the focal point of ESPN’s First Take.  While others in this community of sports commentators have offered more objective reviews on LeBron James, Skip Bayless continues to banter and bait about LeBron’s continuous failures on the court focusing on his inability to win an NBA Championship.  That all ended tonight with the Coronation of the King! LeBron James dominated this NBA championship series and now has his well deserved NBA championship! This has to bring the end of all criticism of LeBron James.  In a well deserved final victory in tonight’s 5th game of the NBA Championship, LeBron dominated his opponent in winning his first championship.  Grant it, it was a total team victory! Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Shane Battier, Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller, and a…

In a remarkable Game 4, the Philadelphia Sixers overcame an early abysmal performance and as much as an 18-point deficit to even their NBA Eastern Conference series against the Boston Celtics.  This was a Boston Celtic team who many proclaimed had “levied an old school beatdown” on the Philadelphia Sixers in Game 3 largely because their next potential opponent, the Miami Heat, was vulnerable with the loss of their center Chris Bosh.  In effect, the Boston Celtics had “the eye of the tiger.”  They smelled and tasted the Eastern Conference championship.  However, if you know anything about Philly, you know it’s the city that embodies this notion of “the eye of the tiger.”  And, this was certainly proven tonight. The Philadelphia Sixers could barely muster enough enthusiasm and energy to score more than 10 points in the first quarter.  Their team play was sloppy and they just could not put…

In his ninth NBA season, “King James” has won his third MVP award in the last four years.  Some would argue that this should have been his fourth MVP in a row.  Just four players in the 66 years of NBA history have won more Maurice Podoloff (named after the NBA’s first commissioner) MVP trophies in their career than LeBron James……and these guys are unquestionably the true “KINGS” of NBA royalty………Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (6), Michael Jordan (5), Bill Russell (5), and Wilt Chamberlain (4).  James joins only three others that have won three MVP awards (Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Moses Malone).  Bird is the only NBA player to have won THREE MVPs in a row! (He has also won THREE Championships).  But, as far as I’m concerned, James can win ten MVPs in his career, and it won’t really matter unless he can also be an NBA Champion!  This year’s…

Dallas Mavericks Give Lamar Odom the Boot

After just four months of lackadaisical effort; a sulking, habitually tardy, and out of shape Lamar Odom was finally placed on the permanent “inactive” list for the rest of the season by the Dallas Mavericks.  That means the Mavs will unload him before next season.  Prior to this ending, the Mavericks management tried to help by granting Odom a 10-day leave of absence earlier this season to attend to “personal issues”.  That obviously didn’t correct the problems.    Shooting barely above 35% and averaging a measly 6.6 points and 4.2 boards per game, in-your-face Maverick owner Mark Cuban had seen enough.  Thanks for the effort, Lamar!  (FYI, that’s not exactly what Cuban told him).  He will receive about $1M salary for the remainder of this season as well as his $2.4M contract buyout while he just sits on the sofa contemplating his future with reality star wife Khloe Kardashian.  Not…

Dwight Howard Lives in a Fantasyland

After months of waffling, including going back and forth THREE times  leading into his final decision, Dwight Howard stayed  put in Orlando.  The Magic management made the 26-year old NBA superstar sign papers to be sure he wouldn’t change his mind yet again, and also allowed him to decide the fate of the current Head Coach and General Manager (who I assume are both staying).  He’ll finish this season for $17.8M (only 11th highest in the NBA), and return next year for $19.5M.  So, if the Magic go nowhere in the playoffs this (shortened) season, we’ll be right back where we started in about 365 days from now.   I thought he wanted to win a championship, which he’ll NEVER do in Orlando……. so that’s why I fully-expected him to leave by this year’s trading deadline.  Currently sitting as the Eastern Conference’s 3rd seed, the Magic simply won’t get by…

Lin-Credible Week for New York Knicks

Up until Feb.4, the New York Knicks were floundering at 8-15 and their two high-priced superstars, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, were NOT developing any kind of team chemistry for their Madison Square Garden fans.  Then, Stoudemire went on bereavement leave following the death of his brother and Melo went down with a groin strain.  Up from the end of the Knicks bench and his brother’s sofa has rose Jeremy Lin, and nothing in the Big Apple has been the same since.   The Knicks went on a five-game (and counting as of writing this blog) winning streak, with the 6’-3” Lin leading the way from the point guard position.  Averaging 39 minutes, 26.8 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals a game, the Knicks are now scoring and passing more as a team, and giving up fewer points too.  Lin’s week was good enough to be awarded the…

Is Kevin Love the NBA’s “Great White Hope?”

Taken as the 5th overall pick (out of UCLA, where he was a consensus first-team All-American) in the 2008 draft, this guy is quickly establishing himself as the League’s best white player, and one of the best all-round players PERIOD! At the risk of being perceived as a racist, I would defy any die-hard NBA fan to name a current starting five of all Caucasian, American-born players.  Seriously though, it can be done, but consider yourself a true NBA junkie if you can name just three.  Long gone are the days of noted pioneers George Mikan, Bob Pettit, Paul Arizin, and Bob Cousy.  More recent years have given us round ball legends like Havlicek, West, Barry, Maravich, Walton, Cowens, McHale, Stockton, and the “Hick from French Lick” (the incomparable Larry Bird).  There were others…..but certainly not many more. I have to admit that the last time I really enjoyed watching the NBA was…
