SMU Gets Legendary Larry Brown to Run the Show

Earlier this week, Southern Methodist University announced that coaching legend and Hall of Famer, 71-year old Larry Brown will be tasked with bringing its basketball program to life.  Let’s hope Brown can outlast his five-year contract!  There’s probably been no better pure teacher of the game of basketball than Larry Brown, and he will try and do it again for his 14th team.  But can Brown really be expected to “connect” with recruits and players over two generations younger?  Think about this for a minute……that would be comparable to being coached by your GRANDFATHER.  Plus, the Mustangs have not made the NCAA tournament for the last 19 years, and have not won an NCAA Tournament game since Brown led Kansas to the title back in 1988.  Talk about a challenge!  No problem for the “man who never met a coaching job he didn’t like.”   To say Larry Brown has…

Brittney Griner Does Play Like a Guy

No doubt, it’s been an exciting and historic year for the Baylor Bears.  First, RG3 became their first Heisman Trophy winner in leading the football team to only its second 10-win season in 112 years.  Then, Brittney Griner was chosen AP Player-of-the-Year and became the first Lady Bear to win the prestigious Naismith Trophy in leading the Lady Bears to their second ever national championship and a perfect 40-0 record, pouring in 26 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and blocking five shots in the final ladies NCAA Championship game.   That was the first time any woman’s or men’s basketball team has ever reached 40 wins in a season!  RG3 and Griner even danced together on the Denver hardcourt following the Lady Bears’ triumph.  The 6’-8”, 208 lb. junior has truly amazed us all, and she has become THE dominant player in all of women’s basketball.  Unfortunately, with all her success…

I never thought I would witness a period of time when College BASKETBALL in Florida exceeded the success of football for Florida’s “Big Five” colleges, but it has now officially happened. The 2011-12 collective seasons for the University of Florida, Florida State, University of South Florida, University of Miami, and University of Central Florida will go down in history as the turning point for this unimaginable occurrence. It probably won’t last very long, but who would’ve ever dreamed it possible! Could it be that Florida has now become the “Indiana of the South”? For those of you that still need the proof, here you go…..   University of Florida Will Muschamp’s boys posted a dismal 7-6 record this season, including a pathetic 3-5 conference record. Gator Nation has been in a deep funk since Urban Meyer’s abrupt exit and Timmy Terrific’s graduation. Conversely, their 23-10, #21 nationally-ranked Gator basketball team…

They better, if they want to play in the NCAA Tournament.  With their sub-par 12-18 record (5-13 in the Big East), the Villanova Wildcats can still qualify by winning the Big East Tournament.  You bet… the odds are stacked against them.  But, I watched a Villanova team last night that I had not seen all year!  And the Villanova Wildcats are the ultimate tournament team. Being the ultimate tournament team simply means they somehow come together at the end of the year and either perform above their expectations or finally perform at their expectations.  Or, like the New York Giants (pro football), this past year, and the Green Bay Packers, the preceding year, they build a momentum and peak at the right time! It’s been a dismal season so far as their record reflects!  This is a team that has participated in the “Big Dance” seven years running.  Yet, it appeared they…

With 6:40 remaining in NC State’s eventual 14-point loss at home to #20 Florida State, former NC State stars Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani were suddenly tossed from the game.  Gugliotta had a 13-year NBA career after scoring over 1,500 points in his Wolfpack career.  Corchiani played three years in the NBA, but left college basketball as the all-time leader in assists (now #2 behind Duke’s Bobby Hurley).   Nobody in Raleigh seems to know why these particular two were ordered to get out, and many Wolfpack faithful feel that former Duke or North Carolina stars would NEVER be ejected as spectators in their own arenas.  Yes, the referee who put the heave-ho to these guys has been reprimanded by the ACC commissioner for not following game management protocol, but there are several obvious details in this story that have been conveniently overlooked, so let me uncover them for the…

Big East Conference Realignment…..Here We Go Again

Big East Conference realignment  started back in 2005.  That’s when Miami, Boston College and Virginia Tech deserted the Big East for the ACC.  This certainly made the ACC stronger in football, but diluted basketball.  To fill the void, the Big East added Louisville, Cincinnati and USF for all sports…….and later, Marquette and DePaul to re-strengthen basketball only.  (By the way, who the hell do these conference big-wigs think they are by stipulating which sports they accept or reject when they bring a NEW university into the fold?  It should be ALL or NOTHING!).  How can a school have multiple conference affiliations depending on which sport you’re talking about?   This much is un-debatable…..the SEC rules college football.  On the other hand, the Big East and the ACC are and always will be primarily about basketball.  Don’t go screwing up this balance of sports nature!  The creation of “SUPER” conferences is…
