NASCAR Archives

You Might NOT be a NASCAR Fan if………….

Founded some 65 years ago, NASCAR has remained a family-owned and operated business that today claims to generate over $3 billion worth of merchandise revenue annually.  That’s a lot of mesh hats!  Don’t we all wish we had that kind of “family business” to fall into?   Believe it or not, TV ratings for NASCAR Sprint Cup racing are second only to the NFL.  About 75 million folks (almost one in three U.S. adults) regularly follow NASCAR, are YOU a NASCAR fan?  You can come out of the closet now, don’t be embarrassed.  The old way to tell was if you could rattle-off, without hesitation, the names of at least 10 current drivers.  Let’s go another way.  With apologies to Blue Collar Comedy ringleader Jeff Foxworthy’s famous redneck bit, I offer any of the 18 reasons below as a means to reveal if you’re NOT so much a fan of NASCAR…

Danica Patrick Prepares for Darlington

Here’s your very quick update on Danica Patrick as the NASCAR circus roles into Darlington, South Carolina this weekend……….The “Track Too Tough to Tame” will be Danica Patrick’s second and most difficult NASCAR test to date.  This infamous short track with exceptionally narrow turns will translate into a lot of bumping, paint swapping, wall banging, and driver-pit crew teamwork.  Patrick will run in tonight’s Nationwide Series 200-mile race and in Saturday night’s main event…….the Bojangles’ Southern 500 with the big boys.    It’s been three months since her first Sprint Cup race at Daytona where she finished 38th, and the 1.36-mile Darlington vintage oval designed in the 1940s will be a monumental step toward achieving top-level status as she moves into a FULL Sprint Cup schedule for the Stewart-Haas team next year.  Danica Patrick will be only the 3rd woman ever to run at Darlington (Janet Guthrie-1977 and Shawna Robinson-2002), and…

Due to bad weather, the 54th running of “The Great American Race,”  the Daytona 500, was postponed for the first time ever. Consequently, it was viewed by the largest TV audience in its history by being moved into prime time the following day; now unopposed by the NBA All-Star game and the Oscars. Unfortunately, the “Super Bowl of NASCAR” still took SIX hours to complete. I do confess that I was drawn in to watch much of the show, and even though I am NOT a racing regular, there were many aspects of the Daytona 500 telecast that still aggravated me. Here are my Top-Five peeves:   #5 – Michael Waltrip as an In-Studio Analyst Michael Waltrip added nothing to the broadcast. Plus, he looked like he was wearing a suit & tie for the first time in his life. His high-pitched squeaky voice and messed-up hair were just difficult…

No doubt, Danica Patrick,  the 29-year old auto racing driver, model, and advertising spokeswoman is easy on the eyes. Love those GoDaddy.com commercials too (make sure you check out the ones on the Internet that aren’t shown on TV). This Wisconsin-born diva and attention-getting babe is all over the place. But please, Danica Patrick does NOT yet belong as a driver in the upcoming Daytona 500 on February 26. You got to earn that, honey! For six years Danica Patrick has driven open-wheel race cars, became the 4th woman to compete in the Indy 500 in 2005, and recorded the highest ever female finish (3rd) in the 2009 Indy 500. I’ll admit to the fact that she is the only woman in history to ever win in the IndyCar series (the Japan 300), but it took her 116 starts to get that done. She began racing in the NASCAR Nationwide…

NASCAR Season Begins: How Do They Get ‘ER Done?

This week the NASCAR season begins with performance testing at Daytona International Speedway. I can’t begin to describe all the changes being evaluated, but I have read that track speeds are exceeding 208 MPH. Through tough economic times, it’s blue-collar fans have continued to grow this sport. As the NASCAR season begins, I must say… I do love the pagentry, the driver trash-talking, fast cars, the old names (Dick Trickle comes to mind first), and the pit stops….but, I just don’t understand how they make it all work by just turning left. Maybe it’s because that their Most Popular Driver for the 9th consecutive year (Dale Earnhart, Jr., as voted by the fans) has not actually won a race in his last 110 straight tries? Maybe it’s because the FIRST official race of EVERY season is their “Super Bowl” (the Daytona 500), and their season-ending event is held in the…
