You Might NOT be a NASCAR Fan if………….

Founded some 65 years ago, NASCAR has remained a family-owned and operated business that today claims to generate over $3 billion worth of merchandise revenue annually.  That’s a lot of mesh hats!  Don’t we all wish we had that kind of “family business” to fall into?   Believe it or not, TV ratings for NASCAR Sprint Cup racing are second only to the NFL.  About 75 million folks (almost one in three U.S. adults) regularly follow NASCAR, are YOU a NASCAR fan?  You can come out of the closet now, don’t be embarrassed.  The old way to tell was if you could rattle-off, without hesitation, the names of at least 10 current drivers.  Let’s go another way.  With apologies to Blue Collar Comedy ringleader Jeff Foxworthy’s famous redneck bit, I offer any of the 18 reasons below as a means to reveal if you’re NOT so much a fan of NASCAR…

The world golf ranking system MUST be flawed if Luke Donald is still the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world.  Unfortunately, over its 26 years of existence and changes, golf’s player ranking system has never received the level of scrutiny of college football’s BCS ranking system.  Maybe now it should.  There’s a huge difference in these ranking systems however…….the BCS includes the subjectivity of voters (i.e., selected poll standings), whereas the world golf ranking system is ALL “math”- absolutely no voting involved!   Therefore, it should be relatively easy to get it right.  After all, a guy who is 0 for 40 in the major championships……really NEVER in contention down the stretch in any of them……..should clearly NOT be ranked as the BEST player in the world!     Nothing against the 34-year old Englishman who played his collegiate golf at Northwestern; but in his 12 years as a PGA Tour…

NCAA Punishes Penn State

I’m always glad when Leo Durocher’s famous adage of “nice guys finish last” is proven wrong………but this time maybe a little more so.  Ernie Els has been struggling with trying to find his majestic golf game in recent years, and he’s also been struggling to cope with his 10-year old son Ben’s autism.  He has been consumed by it, and golf just wasn’t that important anymore for the 42-year old South African golf Hall of Famer, known as the “Big Easy”.  Six strokes behind to start today’s final round of the British Open, Els shot a 68 for a one-stroke victory while 54-hole leader Adam Scott shockingly limped home with four straight bogeys and a 75 to finish second.  Ernie Els, one of the most admired and well-liked players on the Tour, found his game just in time to hoist the Claret Jug and put a momentary smile back on…

There are some indications that a Joe Paterno Foundation will be established in the foreseeable future.  That part seems to be fact.  However, it’s fiction to believe that the Joe Paterno Foundation for Sexually Abused Children will be established.  I believe it should be.  A Joe Paterno Foundation for Sexually Abused Children would allow Joe Paterno to do what he claims he should have done; he should have done more to help the kids that were abused by Jerry Sandusky.  Plus, it would help alumni like I contribute to help overcome this terrible injustice to victims of child sexual abuse. Here are some more notable comments to set the backdrop for my argument: Tom Corbett, Governor of Pennsylvania, Joe should have done more! Watch this video if you have a few minutes to spare.  Otherwise, just keep reading! How Have the Tampa Bay Rays Done It?

I live in the Tampa Bay area, follow the Rays very closely, and still can’t really tell you how they’ve managed to win more than they lose in recent years.  The team has been a little down so far this season, 9½ games behind the Bronx Bombers at this particular point in time in the always tough AL East, suffered through a lot of key injuries, but somehow stay above .500…….how?  What makes this even more inconceivable is that they continue to do it with one of the lowest team payrolls in all of baseball……this season $64.6M (6th lowest in MLB).  They also have to play in Tropicana Field, no doubt the worst MLB ballpark with its outdated non-retractable dome and drab warehouse atmosphere.  Because “The Trop” is located away from the area’s major population center in Tampa, fan support is poor (29th out of 30 teams in average attendance). …

Coming Soon……….Pete Rose Reality Show

Well, its induction weekend at Cooperstown and as usual Pete Rose finds his way into the news.  Funny thing about the timing of this annual coincidence.  This year though it’s much more than “Charlie Hustle” just setting up a table on Main Street signing No. 14 memorabilia.  No…..this is BIG!  TLC has announced that it is planning to air five episodes of “Pete Rose and Kiana Kim Family Project” later this year.  That’s the “working” title for the show.  In case you were unaware, Kiana Kim is Pete’s fiancé and a former Playboy model.  He’s 71, has four adult kids (from two previous marriages), and lives and works in Las Vegas…..where else.  She’s 32, has two young children, and resides in Los Angeles.  Yeah, that should definitely work out.  “It’s NOT going to be class-less like a lot of other reality shows”, says Rose.  “It’s going to be funny, entertaining,…

We already suspected the involvement of three top-level Penn State University officials (fired President Graham Spanier; “retired” Senior VP of Finance and Business who also oversaw the university’s police force, Gary Schultz; and still out-on-administrative-leave Athletic Director, Tim Curley) in the cover-up of former defensive coach Jerry Sandusky’s long-time child abuse behavior.  According to the 267-page independent investigative report prepared by ex-FBI Director Louie Freeh’s law firm, and released via the Internet this morning (See full version of The Freeh Report on Penn State), we can now confirm these three and add one more name to the list…………deceased head football coach Joe Paterno.   The Freeh Report is especially interesting in that the Penn State Board of Trustees actually authorized it, and they did NOT preview it or do any editing before it was released.  The independence and total unbiasness of the report “appears” to have been held in check.  Over 430…
