In his ninth NBA season, “King James” has won his third MVP award in the last four years.  Some would argue that this should have been his fourth MVP in a row.  Just four players in the 66 years of NBA history have won more Maurice Podoloff (named after the NBA’s first commissioner) MVP trophies in their career than LeBron James……and these guys are unquestionably the true “KINGS” of NBA royalty………Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (6), Michael Jordan (5), Bill Russell (5), and Wilt Chamberlain (4).  James joins only three others that have won three MVP awards (Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Moses Malone).  Bird is the only NBA player to have won THREE MVPs in a row! (He has also won THREE Championships).  But, as far as I’m concerned, James can win ten MVPs in his career, and it won’t really matter unless he can also be an NBA Champion!  This year’s…

Danica Patrick Prepares for Darlington

Here’s your very quick update on Danica Patrick as the NASCAR circus roles into Darlington, South Carolina this weekend……….The “Track Too Tough to Tame” will be Danica Patrick’s second and most difficult NASCAR test to date.  This infamous short track with exceptionally narrow turns will translate into a lot of bumping, paint swapping, wall banging, and driver-pit crew teamwork.  Patrick will run in tonight’s Nationwide Series 200-mile race and in Saturday night’s main event…….the Bojangles’ Southern 500 with the big boys.    It’s been three months since her first Sprint Cup race at Daytona where she finished 38th, and the 1.36-mile Darlington vintage oval designed in the 1940s will be a monumental step toward achieving top-level status as she moves into a FULL Sprint Cup schedule for the Stewart-Haas team next year.  Danica Patrick will be only the 3rd woman ever to run at Darlington (Janet Guthrie-1977 and Shawna Robinson-2002), and…

Mariano Rivera Says He’s NOT Done

Sadly, I disagree.  A torn right ACL and meniscus, including the recent discovery of a blood clot in his right calf, will tragically and abruptly put an end to the unmatched 18-year career of 42-year old Mariano “Mo” Rivera.  I say this because even though Mo is strong-willed and was still producing, the always business-minded-first Yankees will use this very timely opportunity to say “goodbye and thank you” after this season ends when Rivera’s current $15M/year contract also expires.  The ninth inning will never be the same for Yankee fans; no more Enter Sandman reverberating through the Stadium, no more smooth confidence on the mound either.  Fresh off his blown save last night against the Rays, enter current Yankee closer heir apparent, 27-year old Alabama native David Robertson!   A date for surgery has not yet been scheduled, but Rivera’s doctors want him to first take a couple of weeks…

This past weekend in Woodlands, Texas about 40,000 lucky fans at the Champion’s Tour Insperity Championship got to witness something very special.  After Saturday’s tournament round was completed, nine of the game’s most legendary names (playing in three threesomes) teed it up for an 18-hole exhibition scramble.  The “Fab Four of Golf” (Palmer, Nicklaus, Player and Trevino) were joined by Miller Barber, Don January, David Graham, Gene Littler, and Dave Stockton.  In most likely will be their last time playing competitively together, the team of Palmer, Nicklaus and Player took home the winner’s trophy shooting 11-under par.  But, what the “Fab Four of Golf” each had to say about the uncertain future of Tiger Woods was perhaps the day’s most interesting tale.     Obviously, these guys know what they’re talking about when it comes to golf.  Collectively, having amassed 464 professional wins worldwide, 188 PGA Tour wins, and 40 majors,…

What Was Junior Seau Trying to Tell Us?

By all accounts, Tiaina Baul “Junior” Seau, Jr. was more extraordinary off the field than he was on it.  He could never be the guy that accepted help; he was ALWAYS the guy helping someone else.  The 12-time NFL Pro Bowler was trying to deal with life after the cheering stopped…….and the real world took over.    A messy divorce, personal financial problems, repeated bouts with depression, a short-lived television series, physical confrontations with girlfriends, and a previous suicide attempt in 2010 all brought him to May 2nd when the 43-year old former NFL legendary linebacker and future Hall of Famer took his own life.  On the outside, Junior Seau was always upbeat and smiling, devoted to his family and community, and loved and admired by all who ever came in contact with him.  Plenty of people deal with the general type of problems he was having and continue to…

Angels Wait for Albert Pujols to Pay Off

OK, I’m not quite ready to put “Prince Albert” in the can with Carl Crawford as a big contract – big bust acquisition, but after getting off to the worst start in their 46-year history, fans in Anaheim are definitely wondering what the hell is going on…….and so am I.  In fact, I still don’t understand why Albert Pujols even said goodbye to the St. Louis Cardinals after 11 years of incredible success and mutual admiration with the hometown fans and management.  Why would someone leave a city that he owned and a team that he lead to greatness?……oh yeah, about $20M.  It’s NEVER about the money though (wink, wink)!   Already at a career-worst of 31 games and 125 at-bats since his last home run (Sept. 22, 2011) and hitting a miniscule .208, Pujols is also irritated with Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher for telling the media how he…

SMU Gets Legendary Larry Brown to Run the Show

Earlier this week, Southern Methodist University announced that coaching legend and Hall of Famer, 71-year old Larry Brown will be tasked with bringing its basketball program to life.  Let’s hope Brown can outlast his five-year contract!  There’s probably been no better pure teacher of the game of basketball than Larry Brown, and he will try and do it again for his 14th team.  But can Brown really be expected to “connect” with recruits and players over two generations younger?  Think about this for a minute……that would be comparable to being coached by your GRANDFATHER.  Plus, the Mustangs have not made the NCAA tournament for the last 19 years, and have not won an NCAA Tournament game since Brown led Kansas to the title back in 1988.  Talk about a challenge!  No problem for the “man who never met a coaching job he didn’t like.”   To say Larry Brown has…
